Celtic Evening - 24-04-2010
Well, if you weren’t there you missed a good one! April 24th at Offendorf, the ESC held it’s first Celtic Evening complete with live “Irish” band (from Karlsruhe which, as everyone knows is in County Kildare!) With live music, Sheila Roberts and Stephen Clandillon organised Scottish and Irish dancing with everyone throwing themselves into the swing. Further entertainment was provided by Stephen reading an Irish letter from mother to son suitably translated into French for the many Francophone's in the audience. You may remember the PS… “I was going to put a ten euro note in this letter but I’ve sealed the envelope”! And “Your uncle said to send you the jacket would be too heavy for the post with the buttons on. So I cut them off and put them in the pocket”! Food and drink was consumed with a fervour not often seen in French circles. And, anyway, we didn't serve “small” beers over the bar. Well, it was supposed to be Celtic. Song sheets provided generated a raucous sing-along to tunes well known to many of the party goers. And there was a special guest, one of Alasdair’s boy-hood heroes, ex footballer Willie Carr. Willie was made famous by a free kick set piece which was to be made illegal! With a traditional Auld Lang Syne at midnight the party sort of ended around 1am with a great number of helpers seeing the room cleared in record time. Rewards for the efforts came in the form a a few “wee drams” from the remains of the whisk(e)y tasting appero. So how come I didn't get home ‘til 3am? But it was great! Good craic! Richard
