Pompidou at Metz - 14-05-2010

On Friday 14 May, Paul Brenner gathered 20 members of the ESC at the station at 9.30 for a day's outing to Metz and the new Pompidou-Metz modern art museum. We nearly spent it at Sarrebourg instead, but SNCF dealt efficiently with a breakdown, and after a brief change of trains at Sarrebourg and at Nancy got to Metz only 30 minutes later than planned. However, that was enough to extend the queue for entry to the elegant, Japanese designed museum to 4 hours. Here it was good to be an accompanier of Monique Roussel, who managed with the help of her stick to get 5 others of the party in through the handicapped door without a wait. They said the interior was very good. Others went off exploring Metz individually, the wonderful stained glass windows ancient and modern in the cathedral, the templar church, the eateries and salons de thé in the green city, under a lowering sky and scattered showers. The return to Strasbourg in the late afternoon was boringly as planned. Many thanks to Paul for an excellent initiative, good planning and getting a nice guide, and to the ESC for subsidising the rail ride. George Walker
